Field Trip to The Lower East Side Tenement Museum, Friday, March 10th, 2017

This past Friday we took some of our students to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, and it was an incredible experience! Located at 97 Orchard St., the Tenement Museum was once home to hundreds of immigrant families and now has been turned into a museum dedicated to preserving their stories. We took a tour called “Sweatshop Workers,” which allowed us “visit to the Levine family’s garment workshop and the Rogarshevskys’ Sabbath table at the turn of the 20th century, when the Lower East Side was the most densely populated place in the world.” (http://tenement.org/tours.php) It was so interesting to see how the Levine and Rogarshevskys families actually lived 100 years ago, and to compare their experiences to the New York we know today. Unfortunately photography wasn’t allowed inside the museum, so those interested will just have to check it out for themselves! Overall, this field trip was incredible, and we can’t wait to go back for a different tour in the future.
