Field Trip to the National Jazz Museum in Harlem

On Friday, January 12th, 2018, the students went on a student choice field trip to The National Jazz Museum in Harlem. Ingri from Colombia had chosen to take her fellow schoolmates to this relatively unknown museum to share her love of the music that made the neighborhood famous during the Harlem Renaissance. Despite being the size of a small apartment, the museum held some true jazz history treasures. Most exciting was the white piano standing in the middle of the room that was owned by none other than Duke Ellington himself! Among other instruments like trombones and saxaphones, there were also a lot of photos of the jazz musicians who would play in apartments like these as well as an interactive music and film archive that allowed the students to listen to music saved from the old vinyl records of the 20s and 30s.
