SPEAK! (...and read ...and write)

All English students want to improve their speaking. And if you come to NYEA, your speaking will definitely improve. But our student-centered, immersive English program is also perfect for students who want focused, high-quality English Language instruction in all four major skill areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Our courses incorporate top notch teaching methodology to improve pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and conversational skills.

But your new English skills are not meant to stay in the classroom! You have to use your language in real-life, native speaking environments. That's why NYEA also offers a variety of optional field trips and extra-curricular academic activities that go beyond the basic tourist attractions to give students a look at the real New York. We plan trips to less well-known museum exhibits, uncover places of historical interest, visit local favorites, and give students a deeper look at New York City life!

Highlights of NYEA’s Standard English Program

  • Emphasis on speaking, grammar, listening, vocabulary, writing and academic skills!
  • Graded weekly writing and speaking assignments!
  • Five different levels with the opportunity to advance each month!
  • Exciting field trips and extracurricular school activities!
  • Starting dates each Monday for every level!
  • Monthly English progress test!
  • New York State authorized Certification of Completion at the end of your course of study!
  • No more than twelve (12) students in each level!

Student Transcript

Each month students will receive an official, detailed grade report based on weekly assignments and exam score. You will be able to see how much your English is improving every month and share your results with friends and family.

Standard English 20: Perfect for overseas students

New York can be a confusing place for newcomers. So NYEA has designed a special program just for them.

Not all students have the same needs. Some have been studying in New York City for a long time, but others have only recently arrived in the Big Apple. These students, often overseas students, are thrilled about their new environment and looking to jump in and embrace all the unique excitement and energy that NYC has to offer.

Standard English 20 is mostly identical to our current 18 hour per week Standard English Program. However, it includes a BONUS 2 hours every week of specialized NYC Survival English to help overseas students (or anyone new to NYC) navigate this sometimes crazy, baffling and amazing city.

Learn about:

  • NYC etiquette
  • Local slang and customs
  • Navigating NYC
  • New York City higher education system
  • Living in a multicultural city
  • MUCH MUCH more!!!

18 hours/week (Full-time)

This program is 18 clock hours per week. Either a morning class or afternoon class, it will help you improve your speaking, listening, writing and reading skills.

You’ll learn to communicate better. Lessons are carefully crafted by your instructors. There is a core text book but that doesn’t mean you’ll just stick to the book all day. Our skilled instructors create a variety of engaging classrooms activities. You may improve your reading skills using articles from newspapers and magazines and summarizing the contents in a comprehensive manner. Or you may improve comprehension by watching a movie excerpt and discussing your opinions.

Students will also have plenty of free time before and after classes and weekends to explore New York City and have fun during their stay here, learning the language.

Standard English Part-Time (For non F-1 Visa students)

Not everyone comes to the New York on a student visa. Often our students arrive here on the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) or a tourist visa. In these cases, the U.S government prohibits them from taking a full-time program. NYEA, however, has created a way for those students to participate in our Standard English Program too.

The Part-time Program is Monday - Thursday. Students will be in the same classes as the full-time students and cover the same curriculum. And they get Friday off! This program is a great choice for non-visa students who still want an intensive, dedicated program.
