Your First Day in New York

Welcome to New York City!

Welcome to New York City! We are happy that you have decided to join us on what is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Now that you are here, let us guide you and tell you what you should do on your first day.

  1. Please arrive at New York English Academy at 9:30 AM on your scheduled start date (which will be on a Monday). If you are not sure about how to get to New York English Academy, please check our location page for directions.
  2. Please bring an ID (identification card) and a pen or pencil.
  3. F-1 Visa holders, please bring the following documents with you:
    • Passport
    • Student Visa
    • I-20 Form

After the administrative staff has checked your registration, your English language skills will be assessed. You will be given a placement test which is divided into two parts: Reading/Writing and Listening/Speaking.

After your placement test is evaluated, you will be assigned to the appropriate class level. You will start your class at 10:00am. At 1:30 – 2:00 PM on that Monday, you will join all the other new students in the Student Orientation. During this orientation, you will receive our Student Quick Guide, School Catalog, a Class Syllabus for your level and a welcome package!

During your program

Assignments (Homework):

  • Each week, you will receive a writing assignment from your teacher.The assignment will then be carefully checked, graded, and returned to you. You will also receive feedback from your teacher with tips on how to improve your writing skills.
  • You will be given a speaking/listening practice exercise each week as well, which your teacher will score.

Monthly Exam:

  • Every third Wednesday of the month, students will be given a monthly exam covering four components: speaking, listening, writing, and reading.
  • A transcript with your grades will be ready the following week.

Field trips or Elective classes

  • Every Friday, the school offers students outside activities (optional) exploring New York City. You will be provided with opportunities to learn about American culture and to practice your newly-learned English skills.
  • • For those students who cannot (or do not wish to) travel on the field trip, New York English Academy offers organized activities for those who want to remain at the school.

Information from the school

The school will inform you of your current attendance rate each month. Students are required to maintain a minimum 85% attendance rate throughout their program period.

Approaching the end of the program

A course Exit Exam

Before the end of your program, you will be given a course exit exam. The date and the time of this final exam will be sent to you by email.

Graduation Survey

  • The school will ask you to complete a Graduate Student Survey in order to ensure that you are satisfied and that the program has provided a high-quality English language education to you.

Congratulations! A certificate of completion approved by the New York State Education Department will be given to all students who successfully finishes their English program.
