San Gennaro Italian Festival in Little Italy

At around 1:30, classes left together to go on foot on Water St. towards Chinatown.

Upon arrival in Little Italy (Canal and Mulberry Sts.), the group wandered both up and down the street fair, taking in the sights and smells of Southern Italian-American culture.

Teacher explained the background of the festival, including the legend of San Gennaro, whose dried blood in a vial supposedly turns into liquid form every 18th of September, bringing good luck.

Students commented on the the different smells of food, including sausage and peppers, not to mention selling Colombian arepas there, one of which an Italian student ironically bought before explaining her confusion about multiculturalism at an Italian festival (“Welcome to New York!”).
