Ramadan Begins June 6, 2016

Muslim Students and staff at NYEA are observing the holy month of Ramadan from June 5 – July 5.

During the month of Ramadan, the Quran was revealed to the Prophet, Mohammed.  “صلّى الله عليه وعلى آله وصحبه وسلّم”. It was revealed specifically on the 27th night, which Allah calls the blessed night (Qadr night). Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic solar calendar and one of the five Pillars of Islam. During Ramadan, Muslims all over the world fast from dawn until sunset. They follow this month strictly to approach God and evaluate their lives through Islamic guidance. The holy month of Ramadan is a good way to cleanse Muslims bodies and souls from bad behaviors, so fasting does not mean only to refrain from eating, but is rather the total commitment of the person’s self control. The purpose of fasting during Ramadan is to remind Muslims about the bounties of Allah and also to remind them not to be wasteful. One of the main goals of fasting is to feel empathy for those who suffer through and face hunger on a daily basis.
