NYEA has made it a tradition to attend the yearly Mermaid Parade at Coney Island. This year the crowds were massive, yet we were able to find a comfortable spot along the boardwalk where we could see all the fish-scale and coconut-bra wearing mermaids and the trident carrying mermen who paraded through the summer heat. We were surprised by the costumes inspired by other sea creatures such as jellyfish, sharks and squids too! Despite long lines, we also got to taste the classic hot dogs and corn dogs at Nathan’s. Finally we found a spot on the beach where we laid out some blankets and enjoyed the sun. Some of us even took a dip in the cold, yet refreshing water while others didn’t leave without dipping their feet in the salty ocean. We will surely look forward to going again in 2019.
